BRIEF: The original book “Yoshi and the Ocean” was released in May 2022 by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The German version called “Yoshi und das Meer” was released by CalmeMara Verlag in March 2023 and a 2nd edition again in November 2023. The publisher and I agreed to keep the feel of the book similar to the English version but to stay flexible in terms of typesetting and layout.
The book’s overall look slightly differs from the original due to several factors. My thought for the cover was to emulate the ocean’s motions by typesetting the title in an elongated wavy manner beneath the turtle. The original has a cover jacket with flaps, whereas the German version leaves out the flaps. That way, the additional information migrated to other parts of the book.
Overall, I was delighted to work with the CalmeMara Verlag, a young but already highly successful German publisher. We always got in such a great mood when working on “Yoshi” and being part of her, Yoshitaro’s, journey through the world.
